what is the rate of loss on salt water tanks, it seems to me that i am losing a little more water than i expected, today i woke up and compaired to yesterday morning, maybe a 1/2 an inch was gone, is this natural with salt water?
Mine evaporates not quite a gallon a day. I have a 250w mh on my tank and temp set at 79. My living room is small 9x13 so with the tank lights on my furnace never runs.
lets say, i want to keep my water level constanly at one level, and in order to do this, i level it every other morning, how drastically will this affect the S.G. of the water, should i mix the instant ocean into the RO water, then test it in the hydrometer, and then fill the tank, or what?
I read some were if your losing a lot of water you can use one or two ice cubes they slowly melt and make up for your water loss aswell as limit serface evaporation on large tanks my be worth a try..
This trick also work for keeping you tank at the right temp in summer when they tend to get a bit to hot..
When water evaporates any impurities are left behind, in this case the salt never leaves the aquarium, only the water did, so just replace it with an equal amount of fresh water.
