We had a delivery day in the fish store I work in and as I am looking through all the new fish I see a baby shovelnose... whole day I was walking around back and forth thinking if I should take the little guy or not. My biggest problem is that they grow up to be so big and I only got a 55 gallon... but since I also picked up a baby Red Devil I just decided I will simply upgrade to a 125 gallon in about a year or so and will use this 55 as an outgrow tank type of a thing.

Meanwhile, I am wonndering what should I feed the shovelnose?

I've been researching them since I plan to get one for my new 150 gal. Like most catfish they eat anything and everything. But being a fish that gets large I would say make the food meaty (like bloodworms, shrimp, clam, shiner, etc). The food item should be a small as will fit in this mouth which will be most anything. Is it a lima or tiger shovelnose? The lima tends to get 2 ft while the tiger can get 3.5 ft! So make sure you've got the right shovelnose since a 125 gal will still just be a growout tank for that type. How big is the shovelnose as well? These catfish grow pretty quickly and a 55 gal will only last him so long (until he gets ~10 inches). Good luck with ithe shovelnose, I love big, active, oddball shaped catfish and can't wait to get mine.

I am not sure what he is, it just said Shovelnose Catfish. Here is a picture I snapped of him just a second ago

You know what is he?

He is about 3.5"-4" right now.

Our Tiger Shovelnose is about 39" and will eat anything it can fit in his mouth - and it's a BIG mouth! He is strictly a meat-eater - won't take any type of pellet at all. He will eat beef heart, shrimp and (most annoyingly) other fish.
