Sinking Driftwood

I'm new to this forum and I'm sure this question has been answered many times. I'm going to be adding a large piece of driftwood to my 180 gallon tank. After sinking it in the bathtub for several days, it still floats. I've heard that it is possible to silicone driftwood to the bottom of the tank, but I think my wood is too big for that. I'm thinking of building a cardboard or wood mold for the driftwood to set in and then pour concete of plaster of paris around it. Once it sets up, the driftwood would be reomved from the mold and set in the aquarium. Is concrete or plaster of paris safe to be in the water - could it change the water's chemistry?

Both will alter the chemistry. Attaching the wood to a chunk of inert rock, such as slate, is safer and easier. You can also stack stuff on top of it, or use tupperware containers filled with rocks to weight it down.

I just tie mine to a river rock with a bit of fishing line. Staple into the wood where it can't be seen. Works fine for me. If you've had it soaking for a couple of days that's good. I had mine soaking for up to a week before it lost enough bouyancy (sp?) to be held down by the rock. And they're just small pieces of wood for a 20Gal.

I have also heard of people using the lids of Tupperware containers nailed to the driftwood, then covering the kid with the gravel and rocks in the tank. Just another idea to look at.

We use slate to hold things down in the tank. We keep multiple pieces on hand with holes drilled through them, making them look like pegboard. Makes it easy to attach driftwood with a screw, or a zuccini with a rubberband.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably use slate for the two smaller pieces, but the way the big piece is made, attaching slate with a screw might be difficult. However the fishing line method might work. I saw on another post on this thread about using plexiglass and weighting it down with the substrate.

all my wood has sunk ( i have never thought about this but it shouldnt do really from what i was told at school)!
