View Full Version : Weird, chronic cardinal tetra lip "scale" - is it a disease?

In talking about quarantine...and disease in another thread. I just realized I have a possible problem w/ a cardinal. I've had him (or her?) for about 6-7 months. But I noticed almost immediately when I got this school (of 6) one would get this strange-looking extra scale-like fuzz (like a goatee) on its bottom lip and ONLY the bottom lip. It's really hard to see and doesn't seem to affect it adversely or the others.

I just moved the school into my new, larger tank I'm setting up as a community tank and don't want to introduce disease. What should I do? Could it possibly be: Mouth Fungus (Columnaris)
???
It seems to fall off and come back from time to time. I don't think any of the others have had it..... It's my largest cardinal in the school and grown a lot in the last 6 months. Never seemed/acted sick. Should I try to treat it somehow? Move it back to the quarantine tank w/ the new fish?

Anyone had experience with this?

Advice please?

PS sorry for cross-post Thanks so much everyone!

Tetras are prone to getting fungus. I have a lot of tetras but have only dealt with fungus 2 times. I used Anti-Fungus, (www.aq-products.com). You do need to watch out when using an anti fungus because most of them will kill you bio-filter.

You might want to try putting it back in to the QT tank and treating it. You might want to try a ½ dose.
