Just a quick question. I recently noticed what looked like half of a clam on the front glass of my tank. Upon closer look I was able to tell that it was a snail of some sort. I went to the lfs...I know, I know...not the best idea...and I was able to see some of the same types of snails in their tanks. I asked someone what they were and I was told that they were "Volcano Snails". I was then told that they were harmless and I shouldn't worry. These snails are extremely small...about the size of a wooden matchstick head and I have only found 1 in my tank. I would attempt to get a pic of it, but it is so small and my camera isn't the best so I am not going to try. My question is, was I told right about this "snail" being harmless or not? I just want to make sure everything is ok in my tank.

Thanks,
Bradd

What shape is the shell? What color is it?

FWIW--snails that aren't found on a coral typically are fine, either grazing on algae or detrivores. Snails that dig into the sand are welcome in most tanks, as well. Predators will be found on their food of choice, and typcially have very distinct color patterns.

From the description you gave it sounds like it's probably a limpet. Most of them are harmless but, I'd look it up just in case.

I wish I could tell you what color it was and the type or shape of the shell. It is really pretty small, so as for the color I really couldn't tell you. The shape of the shell from what I can tell so far...it looks like half of a clam. Other than that I can't tell too much due to it being so small.

yeah, but the snail is so small (about the size of a wooden matchstick head) not sure it would do any good. I can try to get a picture of it if you want. Just let me know.

Ya lost me there...lol. I will try to snap a pic of it...not sure how well it will turn out though.
