Tomorrow I will be doing some major work on my tank, mostly as a result of an extended break from my fishies due to winter break at college. In any case, I am adding more sand to the DSB, my question is....is this safe to do? I was thinking about mixing the old sand and the new sand together so denitrifying bacteria has a chance to populate new sand. Any comments would help.

How much sand do you have? It is best to add the sand right on top of the existing as to not stir up the sand to much. Dont add to much at one time though.

Well it's probably ok to fill in the low spots other than a small sand storm there shouldn't be many problems . The valleys will just come back though unless you change your water flow. You could also move a little sand from one part of the tank to another if you not talking about major disruption of your dsb.

The problem is that these bacteria of which you speak utilize an oxygen free environment.I would however still seed the new sand with the old to help stimulate a nice fauna population.
