What to use in my tank...(substrate)

I recentley received a 55 Gal tank from a friend of mine which I am in the process of setting up. However I need a base to use. I want to option to be able to plant in the future. I want some thing cheap, but i dont know whats good (Sand, Gravel...). What would you recomend for cheap, Thanks.

If you want to get into plants, it's not likely to be cheap, any way you slice it. For now you could go with a finer grade gravel; it won't be as expensive as flourite or Eco-complete and if you do decide to go planted in the future it's easier for plants to root in 1-3mm fine gravel than standard 'pea' gravel.

Ok...suppose im not worried abou thte planting for now, would buying a bag of sand from Home Depot, Lowes... by the cheapest way to go, thanks

Yes. Sand from Home Depot would be your cheapest way to go for a substrate.

Lighting, Co2 are also factors you need to consider if you plan on using this as a planted tank in the future.

If you want to go cheap, set up your tank with the basics and use sand for your substrate. Later, you can add lights and CO2 as money comes your way.
