I have a golden ram which has unfortunately recently lost its partner and now appears to be lonely. I think it is the female, and she just sits at the back of the tank looking very depressed. She does eat but not alot. Do I need to get a new mate?

yes it would be much happier with a companion.

Right now your ram is heart broken.

Actually, (oddly enough) the same thing happened with my keyhole cichlids.

But it was my female that died (of unknown reasons too! :sad) leaving a heart broken and lonely male keyhole. So I went out and got a female (I sure hope so), and even though it may be a runt, I think seeing another keyhole calmed him down and made him happier.

NOTE: Keyhole cichlids never like being alone whether it's pairs or not anyways.

But yes another ram would be beneficial.
