As the tank water evaporates I notice that some solid salt builds up in various places on the tank. I know salt is no evaporating out of solution, and regular DI water is adequate to top off the tank, my question however, is if enough salt crusts up on the tank to drop the sality levels what do you do to get them back to normal? At this point would a major water change be neccessary?

You should be doing bi-weekly water changes or something close to that to start with. "Saltcreep" is normal and has really no bearing on the salinity of your tank. It may to a certain small unnoticable degree. However its nothing to worry about. Its normal.

DO NOT PUT SALTCREEP BACK IN THE TANK! It would be very ill advised. It contains higher amounts/concentrations of elements that are not good for a tank. Plus it doesnt ever fully disolved and these higher concentrations will burn corals. So don't ever do that. Just scrape it off and throw it away.

I don't put the salt back in the tank. I scrape it off and discard it. Freshwater topoffs are good, but be sure to monitor your SG. If the SG gets low, do gradual water changes mixed to a higher SG to get your tank's SG back on track.
