Oh, don't worry about hiding! These little guys have more personality than all of my other fish combined. They come out to say hello every time you walk past the tank. I've had mine about 9 months or so i would guess and he seems pretty topped out at about .75" They're not shaped like the prototypical fish though. They're fat with little faces. The tank does seem a little open with them in there but that's just more of a reason to make it a show tank with some nice plants and decorations.

Full adult size is about one inch, max about 1 1/3 inch, both total length.

I'd allow 3 US gallons per dwarf puffer. They are messy feeders and have large biomass relative to their length. They are also territorial as all get out-out. Crowding causes fighting and possible deaths.

I'm with rtr, territorital, and not to much can hide in six gallons. Puffers tend to be food crazed so will be waiting eagerly each time you pass the tank.

Like has been mentioned I would only go with a pair in a 6g. If you had 3, then the tank should have tons of plants and other objects to help the little guys hide and stay away from each other. I have 4 in a 20g long and all I've been able to get them to eat is bloodworms, brine shrimp, and of course snails.

They do have tons of personality. Every time I pass by the tank, they come to the front of it. I can sit in front of the tanks for a while just watching the little guys hunt down some food. They also seem to eye ball me alot.

My limited experience agrees with what's been said about the territorial behavior. However, I started with three at once and they didn't fight. I had some plants and decorations (its a 10g) but it wasn't densely decorated. While we were away on our honeymoon two of the three died. (we had a fish sitter but an inexperienced one).

We tried to inroduce three more to the tank but they were pestered to death by the one older puffer in a hurry.
