eel's?

hi, just joined the forum, so if i missed a topic, im sorry, but i had a question...


i have 1 peacock eel (striped i believe... if theres a diff) 2 zig zag's and a tire track.

my zig zags are almost allways burried, my peacock is about 50/50 as far as burrowing/swimming, but my tiretrack eel has never burried himself... is this normal for him not to burrow? :confused:
he seems to like to drape himself over the heater (fully sub) but he eats fine and shows no real signs of stress as he eats his ghost shrimp and crickets just fine.

are these eels ever active?
ive seen a tank full of them at the LFS, labled "spiney eels", its got sand and all of them are burried, and they never move a muscle
 
My peacock is very active during the day, cruising slowly around all levels of the tank. He excavated a tunnel under one of my ornaments in which he will hang out, but I have never seen him bury himself in the sand as I've seen with some other specimens at the LFS.
 
my tiretrack is pretty active, he and my two zigzag's scoot along the bottom alot of the time without really swimming anywhere... my peacock however likes to swim up to the top to check things out, then swirl around the plants and decorations and back to the bottom or just cruise the middle sometimes.

the tiretrack isnt much less active, just doesnt tend to cover as much vert area as the peacock.
 
Peacock, Striped Peacock, Starry Night, and Zig Zag will dig quite often, but the Tire Track and Fire eels prefer caves. This is all from my experience of owning each and every one of these guys. Also, these bad boys are mainly nocturnal and will usually be 10 times more active at night than during the day. The new Lunar lighting fixtures solve the problem of not being able to see their activity at night. You guys might want to look into those. One last tip...avoid sharp objects in your tanks as the eels can EASILY injure themselves when they rub against them because they have soft skin unlike most fish who have scales.
