Hi,

I am setting up a 10 gallon tank with 15W fluorescent light for small tetras (not a breeding tank). I plan to use java moss in the front/middle and some Riccia fluitans floating at the surface. What are good background plants for such a tank? They should:

1. be well adapted to soft water and pH=5-6 (I want to use peat)

2. not grow too high (small tank)

3. form dense but sturdy and vertically oriented structures; I don't want long leaves growing sideways or curling and floating everywhere, because the middle and front should be free for swimming

I picked some some possibilities at Aquatic Plant Depot, what would be the best (don't laugh at my choices, I'm a beginner with plants):

Ludwigia repens
Didiplis diandra
Lysimachia nummularia
Hygrophila difformis
Hemianthus micranthemoides
Rotala macrandra

Thanks for any help

what about vallisneria? the dwarf val grows to be about 8 inchs tal, and it has many thin leaves that will look great as a background plant for a small tank. They are pretty hardy as well.

I have some ludwig in a similar set up (except ph 7 and hard water) and they are doing well so far. I was recomended ludwig for my tank, I hear it is hardy. I bought one that was big and bushy, and they will grow taller than a 10g, but the great thing about stem plants is you can cut off the top and plant it, then you have a whole new plant!! so buy one and you can fill your tank with it. that's what I plan to do

I never ever had success with valisneria in my 1.5 WPG tank because that's too little light for vals...
