i recently purchased this pleco (purchase date 02.24.05). at the petstore he was in a 10gallon and looked stressed but not too bad. i noticed some of his bristells were missing, and asked the store owner to move him around so i could see how it looked. when he jostelled this fish it seemed really energetic and lively. well i decided to go ahead and purchase even with the damage on the side of his face. but in all the excitement i forget to check for hollow belly. well i get him home and sure enough, hollow belly. his breathing seems rather labored, almost panting like a dog. he doesnt move much at all and his mouth seems to droop a bit aswell.

i imediately supplied some food to the area he seems to like hanging out. he did eat shortly after i put him in the tank. although he would only eat if the food got right under his mouth, he would not activly search for the food(hikari bloodworm and omega freshwater flake). well its 2 days later now and i fed some more blood worm to his general area and he seemed to eat more this time and search out the food a bit more.

so my question is, what are his chances of survival do yall think? and what else should i do to help him recover?

tank stats:

-55gallon tank
-peguin emporer filter
-millenium 3000 filter
-temp 78F

thank you so much, and i can take more photos if needed.

Whenever buying plecs, ALWAYS check their stomachs to se if they are full or hollow...empty, if its hollow then dont buy it as it pb wont survive the swap from tanks.

Is he with any other fish?

Try sinking pellts or something when the lights go out, hopefully he will survive.

If s/he's eating, you can try feeding pellets soaked in a little tank water with Metronidazole - it's a mild antibacterial, strong anti-parasitic. Good for intestinal parasites like Hexamita. It's not a heavy-duty, stressful med, and is often used by discus owners for treating new fish in QT.

where do you get metronidazole without a prescription?

I get mine at Big Al's - the medication is called 'Hex-A-Mit', it's 100% Metronidazole. I understand last year there was a shortage, and it may be hard to come by. I have some right now that I purchased last year in Toronto, it expires in 2007. I'm not sure what the availability is right now, but you may be able to find it if you call around.

The only thing I can say is to keep doing as your doing, good job so far.
Make it your current obsession to get this fish to eat!
Keep shoving food under its mouth if thats what it takes, and thats the only way it'll take food.
If your home all day, then try to feed it every hour or so, put little slabs of cucumber or zucinni (the seedy part) under its mouth, bloodworms, chopped earthworm, softened shrimp pellets, algae wafers ect...
