Angels with Africans?

Howdy all,

My 55G is as I've listed below in the sig. I'd like to add a couple of angels, but whenever I add even aggressive cichlids to the tank there is immediately a pecking-order-battle that ensues...the cichlids always survive fine and eventually everything is peaceful of course.

But with Angels and their long fins ... would they just get demolished at the get go? :confused:

As an additional note, in case anyone is miffed by my male auratus and the proposal to add additional fish (or even by my current setup with the male auratus...), I used to keep the auratus in a 10g when they were smaller, along with the albino. The auratus -- both of them -- became rather peacefully conditioned and definetly don't live up to the hyper-aggressive behavior traditionally pinned on them.

:huh: I hope you're kidding. Angels are South American cichlids, so their water chemistry requirements are completely incompatible with their African rift lake cousins.

The peaceful angels will not only be killed, it will be a horrible sight to see. The reason your other cichlids co-exist is because of their aggressive nature, which allows them to defend themselves from each other.

You should do more research into Angels, and African cichlids. You'll realize fairly quickly why they should never be housed in the same aquarium.
 
I'd have to agree with the recommendation NOT to add angels. Not only are the water conditions required of angels and africans drastically different, mbuna WILL harass the angels until they no longer live, regardless of current apparent peaceful nature of mbuna or angel agression.

While I agree His current fish don't have the same requirements as the angels he wants, not all african and south american combos are bad. If you llok at the profiles you can find exact matches where PH and Temp are concerned.
 
Angels wouldn't stand a chance in a tank of Mbuna. And I would like to see an example of a SA cichlid that comes from water with a Ph as high as Mbuna. Central American maybe, but not SA.
 
Angels are tough fish, and can adapt to most water conditions, but even if it did
work, are you sure that you would want to have SA Cichlid in an African tank?

If it was my Mbuna's, I would lose the Pleco. There are lots of catfishes from the different lakes that are very cool. IMHO aesthetically it is a good thing to stick with fishes from the same continent, and better yet the same river system or lake. No matter what you do, good luck, but putting Angels in the Mbuna tank is asking for trouble.

you are joking, right? Just b/c something is a cichlid does not mean they can live together. your africans will make a meal out of any angel fish. The yellow lab only would kill it and they are peaceful africans.

Simple rule do not mix the worlds together ( new world is SA and old is Africans).
