Mandarin

He looks nice and fat!!! Does he eat prepared food or just copepods? I have always wanted 1 but I am afraid my tank can't handle 1.
I was working at the lfs the other day and was talking to a costumer who just set up a 90g in Jan. He went browsing so I was helping somebody else. The next thing I knew the lfs owner bagged 2 mandarin for him. I was so disappointed in my boss but I didn't say anything to him. I did however take the costumer aside and told him what's up with their feeding habits. I hope the mandarins are o.k.

Looks very good. I just got a pair--the girl is a red, and the male is blue. Both are pretty happy right now, don't expect them to start taking prepared foods for a few months, though.

A same sex pair is not a good idea--they are very territorial and will fight. Both of mine flare at a corner where they can see their reflections.

He is in a 55 that has been setup for almost 2 years.I have never seen him take prepared foods,I just scoop out some pods from my fuge once a week.I also supplement with live brine shrimp once a week.He seems great and is always picking at the rocks and sand, so I guess he is getting enough.I had one about 8 months ago...unfortunately he didnt fair well :( .Hope this one stays around for a while :)

Beautiful! He indeed looks very happy.

I've got to wait awhile for my 125g tank to mature, so I'm enjoying everyone's pictures of these lovely fish in the meantime.

Skippy, So sorry to hear of that new tank getting 2 Mandarin's. I'm glad you warned the new owner.

Do you guys think a madarin would do ok in a little 3 gallon that has some VERY succulent live rock :p (meaning a GREAT supply of copepods)? I ask this because I don't want to put him into my 55 gallon where my Picasso Trigger might eat him! Will there be enough room for him if its JUST him?

mandarin in a 3G???

No WAy...They eat constantly.Mine is always swimming around and picking at the rocks and sand.I dont know how much rock will fit into a 3g tank, but I have 120 lbs in my 55 and I think if I put another one in there both would probably starve. They need a system that can produce more pods and such than they can eat.It would be a waste of $$$.
