I'm finally gonna put my tank together this weekend. I need to know what to do with a brand new setup. IT's a 40G plexiglass built in over flow. There's a huge protein skimmer. The live (dead now) rocks are sitting in a bucket filled with just water.

So I'll need Bio Balls... what kind and are there different kinds and how many kinds do I need.

For the skimmer is there only one type? A little air rock and a pump to make bubbles? I'll take some pictures later.

What else do I need for the filter?
SHould I get sea water or is it better and cheaper to mix my own? It's been 6 plus years since I own a tank everything looks so foreign to me.

one more thing... do I need live sand? My cousin gave me a bunch of old sand that he hand in the tank but it's been sitting outside for about a year now. Told me it might have been just play sand. Can I mix the two? How much sand do I need?

1st what do you plan on keeping?
2nd skimmer isnt totaly needed but i recommend it.
3rd play sand contains silicates which are bad for the tank.
4th No air stone and pump

I can fill in more once i know what you plan on keeping.

I have some odds and end air pumps at home for the skimmer...

For returning pumping I have a Rio 2500. Right now I have a bunch of dead fuji live rocks that I want to put in my tank and buy a few good ones and start spreading the coraline. Currently I have a snow flake eel and a jewel puffer, 4 or 5 turbo snail and a hermit crab. They're renting in my sister's tank over the other house @ the moment. As soon as get thing stable I'll move them home.

Eventually I would like to have some corals and things like that.... and having Nemo is a must since the kids loves it. It's currently setup with 2x 65 watts 50/50 bulbs... I think they're blue and the other one is one. Also 2x96 watts power compact.

your tank glass dissolves out silicates faster than play sand.
