This is just a little information to help those who don't quite understand the toxcity of ammonia. My workplace is made up of a very large freezer department. Freezing units of course use ammonia. When there is an ammonia leak, the plant must be immediatly evacuated. The emergency response team, who are trained how to handle these situations, must wear a Bio-Hazard suit to enter the area where the leak is. For those who don't know a Bio-Hazard suit is the same as what I'm sure you have seen on TV when they suspect anthrax. This prevents burns and they are equipped with breathing apparatus as well. The two main issues with ammonia are burns and breathing difficulties. I would only suspect that our fish friends are like my co-workers,(easier to get along with though)
. Some people end up going to the hospital by ambulance from just minimal exposure while evacuating, others it doesn't bother at all. No two people are alike, effects from exposure vary greatly from person to person, and probably from fish to fish. Never assume any traceable amount of ammonia doesn't have an effect on your fish. Hope that helps to make understanding the toxcity of ammonia a little easier.
