Despite my attempt at an amusing title, I have a real problem here and am worried about my fish. One of my halfbeaks has broken it's beak. It's quite bad, the bottom part of the jaw is now even with the top. I assume it bumped into the glass a little too hard and snapped it off. I've heard of this happening, but haven't found any information on what to do if it does happen, and how to treat it. There is little info online about these fish, and what is available is often conflicting.

I'm not sure what the best way to go about this is. I hesitate to move him to my QT tank, because it is occupied by 6 hisonotus. However, if I have to medicate this will be my only option. I'm not one to use meds unless absolutely necessary, and I also understand that celebes are intolerant of high levels of salt. My biggest worry atm is infection setting in.

Has anyone here ever dealt with a broken beak before?

I guess I'll give this a bump. I realize not many people on here keep these fish (am I the only one?), but I'm hoping someone sees this that will know what to do.

Thought I'd post an update on how the fish is doing, in case anyone reads this. I have done nothing except observe the fish closely. It had been eating well and acting normally, so I decided just to leave it alone and see what happens. As it turns out, the beak is growing back! I noticed a clear sort of shell forming around the broken part, and then it started to harden and the beak has now regained about 1/8 of an inch or so. I guess I was worried for no reason. I'll still be watching closely of course, but it seems that the fish is going to be just fine. :)
