I've been looking around for information on these guys and I'd like to aquire some to help me get rid of my existing tufts of hair/ thread/ staghorn algae. I've got conditions right so that it doesn't grow anywhere new any more, but I have trouble preventing it from growing in the same places from which i remove it. Unfortunetely it grows mostly from my gravel bed, and bleaching all of my gravel isn't an option. True SAEs and flagfish seem like the right species to do it, but my dilemma is with space and compatibility.

Does any one have experience with either of these fish? I have a 46 gallon tank with 15 h. rasboras, 4 yo-yo loaches and BN and a betta, so I think my stocking is at it's limit. I don't think there would be a compatibility problem with the SAEs, I'm just worried about over-stocking my tank because of their size and schoaling requirements. Flagfish, on the other hand, seem small enough that I could add one or two, but they seem to be on the aggressive side, and I'm worried they might attack my betta.

Any suggestions or experiences? Thanks

I have 4 SAEs in my 90 Gallon, along with 9 Neon Tetras, 2 Blackskirt Tetras, 3 Scalare Angels, 1 Betta, 2 Blue Rams, 2 Cories, 2 Otos, 3 Yoyo Loaches, 1 Rubberlip pl*co and 1 Goldnugget Pl*co. They don't seem to bother any other fish and do a fantastic job of eating all kinds of algae in my tank.
