i was just wondering how much people around the world pay for there fish tanks, as here in Queensland you can pick up 120g tanks from $75- $110 AUS and in all the posts i have read everyone seems to think that tanks that size are really expensive

IME the tank is the cheapest part when it comes to equipment - for me it's the filters, PC light fixtures, specialized substrate, etc. that really add up. It's a little like a 'free' pet - in my house there's really no such thing as a 'cheap tank' lol :D

Here in the USA midwest, I paid $20 US for a 20gal (tank only) and $169 for a 38gal, wood cabinet stand, and hood w/light. sale price, and prices go up from there.

I've been lucky in the fact that with both my 125g i got a free stand for one and a stand and hood for the other one off a friend of a friend for a low $50 AUS

I bet newbies spend a LOT more than experienced people. My fish were next to nothing compared to everything else. My first purchase was about $500 and included just the basics: tank, stand, light, filter, heater, gravel, and a couple of plastic plants (how can they be so expensive?). Then add fish, lots of water testing equipment, more plastic plants, bubble things, etc, etc, etc. This is an expensive little hobby, but I like it!

all up my 1st purchase totalled $300 AUS and that was 2 filters, 2 air pumps , bubble wand, 2 plastic plants, tank, gravel and testers.Heaters ornaments stand and even a couple of my fish i got from a friend for free as he has 6 tanks of his own and it was whilst round his place i got into the idea of having fish.
as for prices of fish around here i think that i get most of em pretty cheaply as theres a good 8 or so lfs within a 30 min drive of my house and because my m8s all shop at these places we get a discount on account of buying so much from them

I'm investigating/budgeting a 125 gallon at the moment. I expect to pay close to $300 US for the tank itself. Since I intend to go with a planted tank, I also will be paying through the nose for lighting. I still haven't decided if I want to go with a specialized substrate like Flourite yet. I really like the sand in my 29 gallon currently and the plants grow like weeds, so I am not so convinced that Flurite is even necessary. At any rate, I will be spending well over 10 dollars per gallon once you account for fish and plants, so that rule of thumb just gets blown away with a planted tank, in my opinion.
