I'm not sure, but I think it's too smooth, the roots have to hold onto something. Why not try putting a thick strip of aquarium safe silicon on the pot and pressing it into gravel? That should make it rough enough. If you don't want to cover the whole pot, the strip should be fine and the java fern roots will soon cover the area so you don't see the gravel anyway.

No it won't stick. Neither will Java moss. The idea with the silicon and rock is a good one and would work.

How about substituting a three-quarter chunk of a coconut shell? This works. I like the pushpin idea for attaching the young plant. Better than a staple.
What you want is a movable cave/Java Fern, right?
