Depends on what you run. If you have a skimmer, carbon likely won't be needed other than for specific uses (ie, medication removal), or if you have lots of softies that are known for chemical warfare.

Then you'd only need to run it if there is a problem . like if you've just used a med or your water looks a little yellow etc.
