I finally got my tank up and running, and I have two young clownfish. They are about an inch each. They are exploring the tank a lot and loving the currents and whatnot. I have an aqua c remora, but I do not have a pre-filter yet, I plan on getting one in the near future, but for now I kinda cringe when I see them swimming around the naked powerhead opening. My question is, is there a safe way to make sure they don't swim into the powerhead and not hurt themselves? I have been thinking about small sink drain screens, but most of those are made of copper. Would that copper hurt my young system? Remember this is just a temporary solution until I get the pre-filter. Any suggestions would be great. I was also wondering how effective the pre-filter is for removing the top skin off the tank and reducing micro-bubbles. Thanks!

I don't think it will remove the surface film. You would need an overflow to do that. I would consider installing a sump. That is the only way to go. You should have no problem finding a basic prefilter at a good local pet shop.

The copper screen makes me really uncomfortable. Wouldn't there be a plastic one that would do the trick?

When you say pre-filter, do you mean the surface skim box? That would solve both problems. I used a similar thing with a bakpak, and the film was gone within minutes. My serpent star decided it liked climbing in, but never had a powerhead mishap.

Thanks for the help. I found a plastic screen that works fine. Hope to get the surface skim box within a couple of weeks along with some pc lighting.
Thanks again!
