ok I recently found out if I am doing a planted tank that my UGF will not work well and I will need another type of filter. if this is true what filters would you recomend for a 72G decently planted tank. brand names and model numbers please:)

I would get an Eheim 2028 canister filter. I would prefilter it with a Filter Max III prefilter sponge. I would pack the 2028 for bio-only operation a la RTR's well known method: I'd forgo any floss pads or mechanical media and pack the canister exclusively with Ehfimech. That way, you'll have a canister that requires opening and cleaning only ever several months. The prefilter can be rinsed weekly; it will provide mechanical filtration, while preventing most of the solid crud from entering the canister.

Depending on the fish (i.e., how messy they are), I might consider a second filter, one dedicated exclusively to mechanical filtration. You have many choices here, but the key should be choosing a filter that is easy to clean, so you'll keep the media very clean, thus avoiding the breakdown of solid wastes into liquid pollution. I like HOT Magnums, prefiltered with a sponge and packed with floss or sponge, for this purpose. Even a powerhead fitted with a sponge over the intake will admirably filter the water (although it's not so great for a display tank).

Does this help?

sure does Jim, I will do some research into that tonight. why is the UGF not recomended for planted tanks? could I use it as a backup filter?

I don't do planted tanks, so I can't really answer. I do know that UGFs tend to require higher maintenance, at least in unplanted tanks. I have a couple tanks with UGF (actually, mine are reverse UGFs or RUGFs), and I think they're OK. I wouldn't use them in tanks with really messy fish, like most cichlids, though. Who needs all that crud in the substrate?

HTH,
Jim

Jim those are running a little more then I would like to spend, cheapist I saw was $250 how about the Fluval 404 or anything closer to that price range?

a 404 will work.on my 90 i have a 2028 and a knock off cannister that i got off ebay for$50.the cheapo has more water movement, but isn't as easy to clean.the 2028 is set up for mostly bio, the other is all floss and sponges.the plants will grow alot better, and if you only have a small fish load the 404 will be enough.
