My 29g tank finally cycled a few weeks ago, and I have been slowly stocking it up. Currently, I have...
3 Julii Cories
3 Zebra Danios
3 Otos
3 Red Velvet Swordtails

I plan to get 2 more Danios and was originally thinking of 3 Guppies, but now I am re-thinking the guppies. I am not sure that I want that many livebearers. So... any suggestions. I am looking for peaceful, colorful fish that are not super tiny like neons. I would also prefer some that like to be either mid- or top-water. Are dwarf Gouramis too aggressive? Thanks for any help!
 
Dwarf Gouramis can be aggressive, but that matter really boils down to the individual fish's disposition. Some are very easygoing and perfect for the community. Some are little sociopaths. Getting one or the other is a matter of chance.

Killifish and Rainbowfish are excellent community fish, are quite peaceful, and come in a variety of colours.
 
I have two male guppys (that way they can't breed), that are really pretty, There may be some sort of rule/suggestion as to how many to keep, male female etc. but mine seem very happy, so it might be an option. Also what about some sort of tetra? I'm not sure if you have room for another school, but there are lots of different kinds, colors, etc
 
killie fish are real nice like a couple of red spotted purple killies would look good or there are some tetras would look good like a red phantom or congo tertas (they dont look like much when there young but there very pretty when they get more full grown
 
If it were me........ I wouldn't get the guppies.

In my experience (IME), when I had zebra danios they would nip and chase my guppies (you may have a completley different experience, so I can't use it as a general term), also IME swordtails can have an attitude. Mine had an attitude towards my guppies and my platies (a relative to the swordtails and a MUCH better alternative), but again your experience may vary.....

I agree with getting some more danios.

Also, maybe getting two or three more juli cories would be good too. (cories are schooling fish too) :)

Now, you don't have to follow my stocking suggestions but if you want to, here it is:

29 gallon:

5 or 6 Juli Cories

6 Zebra Danios

3 Otos

6 Platies (REPLACING the swords)

Platies are MUCH more peaceful and they are also smaller and come in a wider range of colours IMO (in my opinion). :)

These suggestions are really helping. I have been trying to find out more about the Killis and Rainbows. They seem to come in a wide variety of colors. My Danios and Swordtails seem to be co-existing just fine, however, the Swordtails do spend much more time along the bottom than I would have expected. They like to nibble on the sinking wafers that I put in for the Cories and Otos. I think I will shy away from the potential sociopathic Dwarf Gourami.

Keep the suggestions coming. You are really helping me out.

don't rule one out completely, for the most part they're rather shy. It's only the rare odd one that just can't get along with anyone. I didn't mean to paint them as a timebomb waiting to blow... more as a precaution, they can be aggressive, but most are fairly passive so long as you only put one per tank. They're quite nice fish, just in case you get an aggressive one I felt I'd let you know that not every single one is a sociopath... Take back the aggressive one, and try for another one.

Congo tetras and rainbows are 3 to 4 inch at maturity and need a big tank.
The exception is dwarf neon rainbows, 3 could work.

I'd go with 4 more zebra danios and maybe 2 cories of another variety :)
 
I am going to get the danios today (2 more for now) and peruse what the selection of fish the LFS currently has in stock. I want to make sure that I don't over stock the tank, so if I do get any more fish, I gues that they will probably need to be 2" and under in size. Please let me know if you think that this is overstocking.

So far everyone seems to be getting along and generally hang with their own kind. The cories hide under a rock overhang and some fake plants quite a bit, but as I understand it, that is normal. They have certain times of day that they come out and "play". The otos "hang around" and the danios never stop moving. I am watching the swortails carefully to make sure that they don't bully the other smaller fish in the tank.
