Newbie here. After one month with my new 55 gal tank the hum of the Whisper 60 is taking a mental toll. I brought the unit into my LFS for evaluation. They were very accomodating, took the unit apart and replaced the motor; however, it is still too loud.

I am looking for suggestions regarding a quieter filter option. We have a Fluval 404 at the office and it seems pretty quiet. If I go the Fluval route, should I save money and purchase the 304. Thanks.

WoW,sorry to hear that,my whisper 60 is nearly silent, you may have a problem w/the impellor.
I also use an aqua clear 500 witch is also nearly silent, both filters do a great job!!!

I use a Top Fin 60 OTB filter for my 55 gal. It's been nice and quite for about three weeks now (since I bought it...)

Hi, welcome to AC :D
There's definitely something wrong with that filter, Whisper filters are pretty darn quiet. Will the store exchange the entire filter for a new one? My guess is the impeller shaft is slightly bent, or some part of it is otherwise off-centre.
If you do go with a canister, I'd recommend a FilStar or Eheim. From what I've heard, Eheims are SILENT but they can be expensive. I find my FilStar is very quiet and extremely reliable and easy to care for. My LFS highly recommended these two over Fluvals and I trust them. Try doing a search for all these in the equipment forum, you'll see loads of reviews.
