yep. made the ole impulse purchase 2 weeks ago. skunk botias. 2 of them, about 3/4 - 1 inch long. playful little guys, full of energy. what possible harm could they do?

well, first they killed one 2.5" turquoise rainbow in the first 24 hours. two days later, they started badgering my other turquoise rainbow, this one closer to 3" long. i moved her to another tank that had 3 small bosemani rainbows(about 1" long apiece) and she started attacking them within a day.
so i moved her back to the tank with the botias thinking she might start holding her own. she didnt, so i moved her to a 10g with 1 cory and 1 CAE. she died there overnight, probably because of stress and all the moving around.

the next victim was a rummy nose tetra, followed by a juvi CAE and finally a tiger barb(although im thinking that the tiger barb may have been on it's last leg and the skunks just helped it along).

so my next move is to put the 2 skunks in a 10g with a mature yoyo loach that almost never comes out of his decoration. there are also 3 gold barbs in this tank, but im going to transfer them to my 55g so they don't meet the same fate as the other fish.

just another example of why you should always do the research before the purchase. i knew to do that, but shrugged it off. i'll know next time.

i had a skunk botia for a few months... he shreded my angelfish repeatedly and terorised the clown loaches that were 5 times his size, and nipped at just about everything else he could catch up with.

i purchsed 3 to begin with and they were very scared when i first introduced them. one vanished w/o a trace, one died for reasons unknown and the third was left solo, it was after that he became a pest.

he was only about an inch long, but it was coming down to, keep him, or keep my other fish.... i chose to kill him off.
i felt bad about it, but he just wouldnt listen to reason, heh. :(

geeze, i have never heard of that! killing one instead of trading or giving away, that is. i have two skunks and two yo yos in a 29 and never have had any problems. of course, the other mate is a blue gourami who raises gehenna with anyone who ventures near. I wouldnt put any botia with peaceful species as I have always considered them a semi to aggressive fish. good luck with your fiesty fellow....

the yoyo i have in the 10g is about 2.5" or bigger and has always been spooky. he only ventures out at night or when noone is present. as soon as you walk in the room he gets inside his stump ASAP. i took it out to clean one time and he buried himself in the gravel. he lived with a CAE that was the same size as him and 1 lonely neon and there were never any conflicts between the three. ill see how the skunks do with him. theyre super active and he's rarely seen, so im thinking confrontation will be minimal.

I agree, skunk botias can be nasty little buggers. In fact at work, we have 3 of them in a tank full of assorted african cichlids all about 1 1/2 to 2" The skunks actually chase the africans around and try and nip at them. They're very brave little guys, I give them that.
