I am picking up a 80 gallon tank soon. I think I have convinced my parents to allow me to set it up at the office building they own/I work at. I want to do a planted tank with some nice, colorful, larger fish. I love discus, but I am concerned that I would have to doctor my water too much for them. I have yet to check the water at the office, but at my house 20 minutes away the ph is 8.2 and I can't remember the natural KH right now, but it is hard.

At home, I've been able to lower it enough with an RO mixture to be able to support gouramis, tetras, and angels/rams will be added to that soon enough (crossing my fingers for the rams). As of last week the PH at home is now 7.4 and the KH is 9.6, I have been working on lowering this slowly, we will see where I am at with the next water change.

I am sure I could clean the tank during down time, but I am wondering if the amount of RO water needed during water changes would make discus an unlikely choice for this tank. I also read that they do best as a single species tank. Should I stick with angels, rainbow fish and the like instead?

i dont really know much about angles but i did learn some stuff when i was thinking about getting them. They do prefer to be with there own kind so they would need a speceis tank and they need a ph around 6.4 i belive it could be less, so if you were to do this i would think it would be a lot of work to get the water right so you should probably think of different fish.

cichlid or gouramis i would suggest cuz they are very colorful and atractive
"love the pink floyd qoute iv been listing to him all day and thats one of my favorit songs"

Floyd rocks. I listen to them 24/7 if I have the chance. I might bust out Echos right now, that I think about it.

Yeah, I think that a tank centered around angels would be a lot easier/more feasible.

Yes,

Discus can be difficult. Very sensitive! For a large tank like that, malaysian or African driftwood can help keep you ph down and water soft. You can get quite a bit for that size tank and not have to worry about Ph and hardness for a long time. It does turn your water brown ( Tanins (spelling)) at first but if you use carbon in your filter it will take the color out. Besides angel like darker waters although they show nicely in clear waters in captivity. Say, did you get a stand for that 80 gallon yet? I hae a Black pine that I'm letting go for $80. Display model, never used. Just needs a door adjusted and some touch up that I can do. If interested, go to selling forum on AC. Personally, I prefer Discus but I love Angels and Rainbows too. Discus more exotic. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm getting a stand with the tank, thanks for the offer, though.
