I set up the DIY CO2 last tuesday. Went to the desert for two days, went to SD this weekend (friend from LA had bad car trouble [wheel bearing shattered and melted onto his strut] so I had to bring him back up and down again) So basically, I didn't test anything for the week. I came home this morning. Got water, went for the first water change sinse CO2.

Tested my water before changing it. Ammonia, good. Nitrite, good. Nirate, good. PH 7 (whoa, it was 7.4 before I left). Kh.... 16. Did the calculations, CO2 was WAY too high. in the 40s.

Changed the water like normal. Tested again. PH 7 KH 13. Big sigh of relief.

I will be testing my water daily to see how often I need to do a change now. All my fish are fine.

You should be fine, I've noticed the same if I have a little too much yeast in a new batch. The initial output is a little high and for a few days I'll have CO2 in the 40's. The fish (rummynose tetras, albino cories, oto's, gertrude's rainbows, a betta) never act as if anything is different. They still have bright colours, are active and hungry, overall no signs of stress, so I just leave things as is. The CO2 production tapers off after a little while, although you'll need to keep an eye on it, since it started so strongly, the batch won't last very long, a week-10 days tops I'd guess.
