Looks to be some sort of bassy fish or walleye or perch kinda thing... I can tell it's probably some type of gamefish and will grow to at least one foot. And yes, I AM psychic. :D

Peacock bass are not native to North America, but have been introduced in many areas and become "naturalized". I would be suprised if they survived in the wild in Canada, as they prefer warmer climes (native to South America). They can be found in just about all the freshwater areas here in South Florida.

All the peacock bass I have seen here have vertical bands, the fins are reddish and there is a definite black spot - sometimes with a narrow white or gold ring around it - on the tail near the fin, but not on the fin.

I agree that the photo looks more like a pike or chain pickeral.

Take a look at this link and see what you think. This is a chain pickeral.

And this is a peacock -

the body on that fish is way to short to be a pike or pickeral i have never seen this fish in US waters and i have done lots of reaserch on native fishes.

It does look very similar to juvenile peacock bass I have seen in LFS - here is a link with a pic of a juvenile - http://wetwebfotos.com/Home?actionRequest=mediaView&ID=2502 - in the stores, I have seen them with more barring like the one in your picture, when they are quite small. There are other Cichla species that are also closely related to the peacock, and this might be one of them.

Seems to me like a common largemouth bass in its pre-pubescent stage. Although I could be wrong.....

it appears to me that the fish in the picture has very small scales if it was a bass or pike it would have very large scales that would be very visable i have kept young bass and other sun fish and i can tell you it isnt one of those.

Point of clarification, please - is this fish in a shop? Did you buy it? Did you catch it?
