im about to purches filters for my tank and i was told that the Aquaclear filter is better for saltwater over the bio wheel? Is this true and if not what filters do you recomend for a 55 gal tank.
What kind of tank will this be used on? Generally you want to avoid bio wheels on reeftanks but they are fine for fish only tanks. Bio wheels generate nitrates that are not desirable in reeftanks but fish can tolerate alot higher levels of nitrates than corals can. My preference is for the Aquaclear filters because they have alot of room to add extra carbon or other filtration media in their chambers plus if you later go into reefing they can be modified into hang on refugiums pretty easily. There's an additional reason to avoid bio-wheels--in slatwater, they increase evaporation and salt creep.
However--depending on what type of tank you're setting up, a power filter may not be needed. I don't run any sort of power filter on any of my SW setups.
