Too many plants? Too few? Suggestions?

Where'd those fish come from?
Slightly murky water?

My almost-four-year- old daughter was given a small common goldfish (now named Nemo, surprise, surprise) and we now have a ten gallon tank in our kitchen stocked with two plastic plants, Nemo and his three 'fish friends' and three real plants. (There's maybe 6 inches of fish in there). The plants are Indian Fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides), Cryptocoryne wendtii and pennywort. I got the last two plants out of the 'needs TLC' tank at our LFS, so I'm not 100% sure on the id, but they look pretty close.

Is there anything i need to do or add? I've never had algae, though the water is just slightly murky--did you know that independant four year olds are a direct cause of overfeeding in fish tanks? Other than that, the fish seem happy and healthy enough--they're active and they're always begging for food. Oh, and I have 2.6 watts of flourescent lighting per gallon and fertilize with trace minerals weekly.

Comments? Suggestions? I know that this is a bit heavy for a 10 gallon with goldfish--I do a 30% water change twice a week, with the plants hopefully grabbing up a bit of nitrate in between. (i'm hoping to someday hear my husband say, "Honey, those fish need a bigger tank...")

Hmmm, goldfish and plants usually don't get along so I'm glad to hear that it's working out for you and that Nemo hasn't decided that that nice looking salad is ready yet. Murphy's Law would have him wait until you've got the tank just how you like it. ;)

Some java fern on driftwood is probably the best bet. It's a tough plant and even nibblers like goldfish will tend to leave it alone, or at least do minimal damage.

Incidentally, the goldfish will need a bigger tank, soon. The standard rule of thumb for a goldfish, I believe, is 15g each, even then, a goldfish will need much more room than a standard 15g to live out its full lifespan.
