Recently I decided to buy a male convict. I had a female already and decided I wanted to try to breed them so my angelfish (in another tank) could have some tasty snacks. I put them both in the same tank (20t) and immediately the female began harassing the male. They're both about the same size, but she chased him all over the tank and harassed him to no end. I was afraid she was going to kill him. The next day it was vice-versa. Now, two days later, she's showing frayed fins and is very skittish. I've tried re-arranging the decor in the tank and even set it up so he can't see from one side of the tank to the other to see her. She's got lots of caves to hide in, but prefers to hide near the top behind the power filter. Any ideas how I can get them to breed without killing each other first?

well first a 20g tall is to small for two convicts need atleast a 30g or bigger they r probadly fighting for territory

Nah I breed mine in a 10g with an AC 300 just to make sure I have enough filtration. Mine have NEVER had any problems fighting. They were always together. I've had 4 spawns from them so far. What I would suggest is to take the male out, let her establish her territory then put the male back in. This is the way I did it and my female would hold her own against my larger male.
Worth a shot!!

Possibly try using a separator for a week or so, so they can look at each other but not be able to fight.

Another thing is to try adding more hiding places, like rocks, wood, and plants. That would help them be able to hide from each other when they get too rough.

I got a separator and put it in there. Worst case scenario it won't let the female get beat to death. I've got a lot of flowerpots, rocks and a handful of fake plants already. She hides in there and then he finds her and chases her out. She seems to make no effort to defend herself.
