Do I need a bubbler with a Whisper filter?

Afternoon, everyone.

I have a new tank and it did not come with a bubbler. It did, however, come with a Whisper filter.

I have a freshwater 10 gal. with two Platys, at the moment. They are both doing fine, but I am concerned that I might be slowly suffocating them.

Does a Whisper filter, with the spilling water back into the tank, provide enough oxygen back in the water for the fish?

Thanks for any advice or comments in advance!

Don't worry about it. You do not need one. They are more for aesthetics (and that's debatable;)) than function. A normal filter provides plenty of oxygen saturation. Its not even the bubbler itself that would "increase" oxygen, it is merely that it creates surface agitation which allows for a better exchange with oxygen in the air. If at any time you feel you want more oxygen in the water such as during medication/treatments when the temperature must be high (cooler water holds more oxygen and hot water holds less) you could simply lower the water level in the tank a half an inch or more to create more splash from the filter:)

Have you cycled your tank or read up on cycling? If not, please check it out in the stickies section and using the search feature.

Welcome to the site and hope you stick around!:)
