Dear all,
Any special formulas for calculating the size of a Protein Skimmer ( in terms of the pump capacity use on the skimmer) when buying.
Let say my tank is 80 gallon and the sump is 80 gallons. What will be the appropriate capacity or size of the skimmer taking into consideration that it's a FOWLR.
Thanks

I go with the total volume of water in the system. The skimmer has to deal with the full amount of water, not just the amount in the tank.

Go with the full capacity of the tank and sump then use the manufacturers rating for their skimmer. You should also take into consideration the bioload of your tank. I would also say to limit yourself to 75% of the manufacturers recommendation (i.e. a skimmer rated for 100 gallons should go on a tank of 75 gallons or less IMO).
