hey all, so i went and checked my minnow traps today, i was ammazed to find that i had 28 warmouths and while i was there i caught 2 dragon fly larva <i think> 10 guppys, 8 other yet unknowned sunfish, and 5 mosquito fish,. still no water scorpion yet, im thinking they will be hard to find and catch.. just an update, so for all that want native fry now is the time to set minnow traps, it sure does work and the ticks aren't out yet..

Why would catching fish in a trap be illegal?

some places regulate how and with what bait you can catch fish. It also depends on county and permits location which body of water all sorts of regulation and NC has some strange rules from what I have seen.

You can't catch gamefish with a trap, at least you can't keep them if you caught them this way in North Carolina.

Nongamefish, catch as many as you like. :)

to my knowledge sun fish are considered a bait fish.feeders for game fish~! they sell them for pond stocking and are not considered a game fish persay, yes there is size limits and quanity limits on game fish like bass and gar,pikes..ect.. people do catch sunfish and some are prized fun for catching but i can not find any info on sunfish being listed as game fish .
i have spoken to local wildlife fish and game management and the division of mariene fisheries all have said it was fine to trap and keep sun fish as long as they are not sold or made any profit from. if my post offends any of you and you feel it wrong to catch sun fish please feel free to chime in..

knowy, have you spied a water scorpion yet? btw, that was a great series of pics!!!
when (if) you come across the scorpion what do you plan on keeping with it?

well this will make many of you happy,
the following fishes are listed as inland game fish black bass, crappie, sunfishes: bluegill, redbreast sunfish, redear sunfish, pumpkinseed ,warmouth, green sunfish, roanoke bass, rockbass, flier and many other that can ONLY be caught with hook line and sinker..
so yes it is illeagle to do what i did and trap fish to keep in an aquarium, but you can go catch one or more and put adults in your tank and raise them. if only not for resale.. so I AMMIT I AM WRONG .. and it surly wasnt smart to post on the net because with all the sensative people here it has turned from a great catch to a major grief..
so now what do i do, well i WILL return the fry today and put a line in and catch a large adult, which i feel is worse, to keep in a confined enviroment and try my luck on breeding them..

nuriel, if i do find a water scorpian which iv'e found isnt easy i plan on keeping it in a 5 gl tank and feed it small guppys, i found dragon fly larva yesterday but water scorpians are harder to spot.

Knowy,
I think what you did is fine, just do not keep the gamefish/sun fish and things are all good. Your other Catch of non game fish is great, such as the mosquito fish, and are you sure those are actual guppies? I can not pull up the page you have listed.
But if you ever decide to do a outdoor water garden, with a whiskey barrel, the mosquito fish would be a hoot to have in there.
