I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this is that is growing on my rocks. (It is the red stuff in the picture.) It doesn't appear to be coralline algae because it is jutting out from the rocks. It is popping up on a number of rocks in my tank.

Tank: 12 weeks old, 135 gallon, 180 lbs LR, LS, sump, protein skimmer, AquaMedic 10k MH light, 2 percs, 2 Scarlet cleaners, 1 Serpent star, 1 Sand sifting star, Colony polyps, 4 Bullseye mushrooms, 10 blue legged hermits, 30 assorted snails, 1 Lettuce Caribbean Nudibranch, 1 Emerald Mythrax Crab

There are several types of coralline algae, some which do grow away from the rock, but these tend to have a more scalloped appearance, and be more purple. Off hand, it looks to me like clusters of stony tube worms--not all produce white tubes.

i've always had that question :)
nice that u asked it...

just another theory they look like forminifreans ," I have no idea how you spell it", they are sort of a shelled ameba," can't spell that either".
