My 5.5g planted tank currently houses a male betta. Would you recommend some cory for the bottom to help balance out the tank? Its such a small space I don't wish to overload.

Cory would be just fine, but i believe you need more then one as they are schooling fish. Atleast half a dozen, but im ive never had any so my point may be useless.....

a 5g would probably be too small for cories, as the little guys need room to cavort about.
Maybe a frog, or some shrimp?

Its too small for them. Have you looked at the ADF arcticle?
Shrimp would be perfect, either ghost or amano would be best. I had them with my betta and it was very cool. There are some larger shrimp that would work, like cherry and bamboo. Just make sure to avoid anything like crabs or "lobsters"/ crayfish.
Cories are a bit too big for that size tanka dn really need to be in groups.

Thanks! I agree. I have a group of 8 in my 55g. I also have a group of pygmies in a 10g. The shrimp sound interesting. Sometimes they are hard to find. Are they seasonal for sales?

Not sure if they are seasonal but you are right they aren't always easy to find. I would ask your LFS and see if they can order some in with their next shippment.

I have some dwarf cories in my 5 gallon tank they are fine and happy poking around or hiding in the tower. I would get a few of them maybe some shrimp, I suspect its not that they are seasonal as they can have big die offs in areas that get cold during the shipping. I would also consider planting heavily if you get the shrimp as the smaller ones like the ghost shrimp will be come dinner

You can have 5-6 Corydorus Hestatus. They only grow to about 1/2 inch.
