Ambulia anchoring problem

it wont stay down!
well yeah, im having problems anchoring my ambulia, i use lead weights and wrap it around the stems and insert into the gravel
problem is after a while the stems start to rot under the gravel and soon enough you get floating ambulia, ive had the same problem with anachris
i dont have this problem with my wisteria however because its put out lots of roots that have gone into the substrate, whereas the ambulia hasnt

any idea's?
 
Two things can help (scrapping the weights, of course).

First a deeper substrate may be the key. I've found it hard to keep plants down in a shallow substrate.

Second, when you prune, cut off just below a node and leave the leaves on, those should anchor it long enough for pruning time to swing back around. Man that stuff gorws fast.
 
I think you lead weights are rotting the stems. Trim leaves from bottom of stem and plant deeper.
