I just got a 20 gallon aquarium, and was wondering what kind of community
fish I can keep in there. And what kind of algae eater could I put in there
and I dont want a plec.

Thanks Tom,

you can put all sorts of tetras. siamese alge eaters otos make great alge eaters (at least they did for me.

I would advise you to cycle the tank first. Read the stickies on cycling and decide whether you want to cycle with fish or without fish. I prefer the fishless cycling myself. If you choose to cycle with fish, it is a lot of work involved, and is stressful on the fish. Or you can buy Bio-spira and not have to cycle the tank.

For an algae eater you can get some otocinclus catfish which stays small, around 2 inches, but I would not buy any for a few months until your tank is stable.

As far as community fish, go to your lfs, see what you would like in your tank, write down the name of the fishes that you choose, and then post it here. Someone will advise you on your choice of fishes, as to whether or not the ones you have chosen are compatiable.

Here's my cookie-cutter list for a South American community tank:

six smallish tetras (cardinals, black neons, glowlight, etc.)

three hatchetfish

three corries

three guppies (same sex unless you want fry, then one male to two or three females)

three ottos

four to six ghost shrimp (actually North American, but who's checking?)

That will give you fish at every level of your tank. You should keep some floating plant like hornwort for the hatchetfish.

This is a fairly heavy bioload, and would probably require weekly 20% water changes.

The ottos will eat some algae, but you will still need to do some scrubbing.

I think mrsdorothys post is perfect information. You could also check a few different stores to get ideas of fish to research, because the ones by me at least each carry a handul of different fish that the others don't have (I just saw my first hatchet a couple of months ago  , what neat little fish!!)
