riiiight here
*sigh*, here it goes.

Well, we've had him for a looong while. More than 3 years, and he wasnt really young when we got him. I mean...he used to do great even after we put him in the 75 in the garage...but over the last few months he's just been....not himself. His eyes are glazed over all the time, his color never changes anymore, he never even bothers to hide anymore. He wont even bother to go after feeders anymore...we have to put shrimp or finger mullet on a plastic skillet and lower it down to him...and I'm not even worried about him biting me anymore. :(

I just dont know what to do with him, he's not happy, and I dont really have room for him...nobody will take him, not even any of the LFS'.
He's just not the same and I dont know what to do, and I hate to have to keep seeing him like this. I know he's just a fish but I always remember what he used to be like and it makes me sad. I dont know what to do.

Wow, I'm not sure what I would do with a fish like that.... I'm feeling for you, but I think that the best way would just to euthanize him. It seems he has lost the will to live. It has happened to some of my fish when I still had a 29 gallon tank with several year old fish.

put him in a plastic bag and put him in the freezer. After 30 or so minutes, bury him in the backyard - if he is too big to flush.

Sorry, I dont think I could euthanize him. I just dont. He's **** near 15 inches long...and I dont think getting him into a plastic bag and into the freezer will be that easy of a task. I hate to say it, but I think he might actually starve to death before anything else happens to him. I dont think it's hibernation, otherwise it seems like I would have seen this before, and he's never been like this.
I was reading the big euthanize post by on of the senior members on here, and one of the suggestions was to actually take the fish out and cut it with a knife..but I swear these fish are armor-coated. This one especially since he's so big.
If I do have to euthanize him (which I dont want to) I think the best thing to do would be to drain the tank down to about 20 gallons, and use the clove-oil method.
I just cant bring myself around to do it and if I did my friend would kill me.

Sorry to hear about your fish. I searched the internet and supposedly in the wild they only live aroung 3 years. Yours is at least three and you said that he was not a youngster when you got him. It just may be that his time has come.

Hi :)

I've heard thing's about them hibernating too......but i really don't think this to be the case.
I've never owned these but, it would be worth checking out, more so with your case!

I really can't think of anything to say to you that would be of any help.
If i were you, i'd try and change his surrounding's around, and hope that the hibernation story is true, maybe to give him a little more interest! i think anything at this point would be worth a shot, if you want to keep him.

I couldn't euthanise him either. I 'd only do this if no one else would take him and it would be my absolute last resort after exhausting all option's.

I do hope it work's out for you.

I agree.....sadly!!

If it is his time and he isn't suffering, then i think you have looked after him VERY we'll and will do until he passes on :(

It is sad, and when i loose one of my babies it break's my heart :sad

BUT, look at it from this point of view...........

You had him in his prime, watched him swim around and love the tank you set for him, neutured him, cared for him, you gave him the good life....and i bet if he could.......he'd thank you for it.
You have done EVERYTHING you could possibly do for him, and you got him heathly to his grand old elderly age....and not all could say !

It is sad, but, if he is at his age then i think he would prefer finishing his day's in HIS tank, being looked after by you........rather than anything else, familiar.......saying that.......

..........you have looked after him this long....and know him better than anyone else.....i think the only one that can get a answer to this question is you!!

This is only my opinion and everyone else will have either similar or very different thought's, BUT, from what you described i think you should listen to what other's say, take it into account, but, ultimetly..do what YOU think is best........after all it's you that has to live with it.

Please let us know what happens
