In the backyard there's a wooden box with a fountain in the middle and it has 2 goldfish in it. Last fall we didn't take the goldfish out (I wanted to but it's my boyfriends stuff and he said no) and the whole set up froze completely solid. Then today to both of our amazements we saw the goldfish swimming around! Wow! They're alive!

My parents have a very large (I'd guess half an acre or so), shallow (sloped, ~2' - ~4') pond on their property, which someone stocked with goldfish long before they bought the house. The goldfish breed and supply the local osprey, herons, turtles and a muskrat with frequent meals. During the winter, the pond freezes over, leaving a shallow area of freezing water under the ice. Every spring, they're back, healthy and breeding. Goldfish really are pretty amazing fish. :)
