Hi, I have recently noticed that several of my rummynose and cardinal tetras have white spots on them. My tank is a community tank, with the following fish:

6 cardinal tetras
6 rummynose tetras
2 dwarf gouramis
2 Siamese algae eaters
5 otocinclus
2 gold ancistrus
approximately a total of 15 ghost and amano shrimp

My tank specs are as follows:

-50 gallon tank (say about 40 gallon if you consider substrate, plants, rocks etc..)
-Tank is heavily planted with Amazon Swords, Sunset Hygrophila Polysperma, Ludwigia Repens, Java Moss and Micro Sword grass.
-PH @ 7.0
-KH @ 4.5
-GH @ 8
-Nitrites @ 0
-Nitrates @ 5 ppm
-CO2 @ 13.5
-Temperature @ 79 degrees F
-2 40w Power-glo tubes @18000k
-25% weekly water changes
-Hagen 304 Fluval filter
-Tetratec UV @ 5watts

I've been reading up on multiple cures for ich but I'm concerned with the effects these cures may have on my plants. I've read that RidIch is fairly safe on plants and sensitive tetras. Anybody out there with experience that could help me?

Advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Raise the temp to about 86 degrees and add aquarium salt(not oceanic salt). This should work over night. If not keep doing it until the ich clears up. Good Luck :)

I went to the petshop and spoke to the "fish expert" there. I was told that Quick Cure used at half the dosage (1 drop per 2 gallons) is safe and effective with tetras. Apparently it will not harm my plants. It is supposed to cure ick in 2 days, but I'm thinking to use it for a couple of days longer than that.

So I'm considering doing the following combination:

1) Adding some salt to my water
2) Raise the temp to 80 degrees
3) 25% water change prior to each dose of Quick Cure
4) Doing 1 drop per 2 gallon dosage of Quick Cure daily for 5 days
5) Administering the dose just before lights go off
6) Turning off UV for the duration of the treatment of course

Your opinions on this action plan are appreciated. I'm not planning on administering anything until I'm a bit more confident about how to proceed. Thanks!

your on the right track, but do forget to take the carbon out of the filter, it will nullify your med, put a new one in when finshed, i personaly us a product called copersafe, good for ich and safe on plants, 1 treatment lasts for 1 month
