Recently got my 20 gallon up and running, heres what we have so far:

4 x red swordtail

3 x head and tail light

4 x stained glass tetras

4 x rosy tetras

Tank doesnt seem overstocked as of yet, but I may be wrong. I was looking for a good mid-upper water swimmer for a centerpiece in the tank. Been eyeing Gouramis but have heard that they dont live long (pet shop guy, dunno if hes legit) ive heard that the males are pretty aggresive, but that the dwarfs and females would be fine. Had been eyeing bala sharks (x2) but I know that they will outgrow the tank rather quickly. Anyone got ideas for a good fish to go with the tank?

gouramis will live a good lifetime not short or as long as some others some fish will out live you or me if taken well care of. I would look at a smaller centerpiece fish maybe a dwarf gourami if thats what you want your tank may become full of fry if your not careful

your tank is similar to my 20 gallon. A dwarf flame gourami would be great, but they are a little hard to find, true colors are more common, not as pretty (imo) but still nice.

My dwarf true color male is with:
4 female platties
10 cardinal tetras

\/ this is a dwarf flame gourami

I believe its a 20 gallon tall, I like the look of those goraumis. At the local store here saw neon (kinda similar) and blue, the blue caught my attention solely for being so different from the rest of them. They might have had fire there, have to double check hehe. Thx for the tips tho, I really want a bichir but I know thats just not in the cards with the setup I have. How many gouraumis will I need in order to keep them from going ape sheet on me?

I would only buy one. Guoramis get territorial with each other. If I was going to buy two, I would consider a male and a female, but females are really hard to find. Plus, having one DG could leave room for more potential fry.
