i have a betta by himself in his 2.5 gal tank. can i put him in the 10 gal community tank i have? i have:
2 semi-aggresive platies
2 guppies
3 swordtails
3 glowlight tetras

so can i? :D

everything that i have read says, yes, they will be ok, so long as there are no other beta's in there. I have no first hand experience with this, and would probably keep an eye on the platties, but i think it would be ok....

Some bettas are more aggressive than others. I've only had one betta, but it was rather aggressive and staked out territory in my 10 gallon. They generally don't nip at other fish though, but can be aggressive if other fish go into it's territory. Watch out for the platies and swordtails nipping at it's fins. Since your tank is rather already fully stocked, and adding a betta will even stock it further to it's limit, make sure to do frequent water changes, about 30% once a week at least I would say for a tank stocked to your capacity.

my neighbor had a betta in his 10 gallon and it killed a goldfish and a swordtail although i had a betta in my 15 gallon with guppies and mollies and it did fine. i guess it all depends on the betta.

I would suggest not putting the Beta in the 10 gallon, I tried putting one in a 10 gallon with about 4 Black Skirt Tetras and he would harass then to no end, so I took him out and put him in a bowl then I got a 25 gallon tank and tried it, but he chased after everybody in that one too. Then I upgraded further and got a 55 gallon tank and tried it (figured the more room, he might not be so aggresive), but nope he is very aggresive. So now he resides in the 10 gallon tank by himself. And he seems to love it better than a bowl, he has lots of room, filter and heat what more could he ask for. But if you want to put him in, I would suggest you keep the bowl ready and put him in and watch him, if he starts harassing the other fish take him out and put him back in the 2.5 gallon.

ok, but mine is anything but aggresive. all he EVER does is hide behind the filter. sometimes hes so afraid, he doesnt even wanna come out to eat! right now, he hasnt eaten in 2 days cuz he wont come out. so by this personality showcase, now watcha think?

I'd say he's either sick or stressed! Forget the "personality"....what are the water measurements (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc?)

Other than that, I'll agree with what another member stated....I believe you have enough to fill up a 10 gallon. A betta is a "hunter" by nature, and with that outlook you can expect them to maintain a certain amount of territory for their food. I have had betta's in community 20 gallons and community 55's. They all did great, and their personalities were quite different. Get a larger tank if you want to add fish!

my mum tried adding a beta to a room temperature goldfish tank 30 gallon with 3 goldifish. He picked a fight he had no chance of winning and was dead the next day. These are agressive fish that seem to start things they can't finish

All the fish you have aside from the glowlights aren't good tank mates for a betta. Their fins are just the type of thing that would make him think the fish was another betta. I had a betta in a 29g community tank and he harassed all the fish untill the day he died. I also agree that the tank seems to be at it's limit for fish anyways. I say leave him where he is for now.
