I got this ciclid about 3 years ago and I have no idea what it is anymore. It lives sucessfully with a large plecostomus and a Green Terror. There is also a little convict that hangs out hiding, but has not been food.

It is the ciclid in my pic under my name. I'll also see if I can attach a pic.

Sorry I'm new here but thought some of you experts could help me before I read all the posts about ciclids or look at all the species of ciclids.

Depends on it's size. If it is still only less than 3" ? it could be a Nannacara anamola. You didn't mention it's size.

Ooo its a tough one. More pictures would help a lot.

To me, it looks like a hybrid Melanochromis auratus or chipokae. That fish is very brown, whereas normally these species arent as brown.

More pictures! :)

Ok I figured out what is is. It appears to the best of my knowledge and with input and species desciption to be Malawi Golden Mbuna (aka Auratus).

Here are some new uploaded pictures so anyone of you can give me a second opinion.

I'm not sure if its a pure auratus or not. Could possibly be a hybrid, it has the markings and body shape but the colors are a little off.

It may be hybridized. Many of the fish in many of our pet shops come from farm raised ponds in florida. Because many fish can breed across species and in some cases (Rainbow fishes), they can breed across genuses. I like this little mutt and I think I got it at PetsMart. I don't plan on breeding it.

It is definitely a male since males are usually brown in color and have yellow stripes. What is interesting is that this fish is "dirtier" than when I got it when it was smaller. I wonder how much that has to do with local water conditions. The PH, interestingly enough is perfect for this Auratus-like creature and not optimal for the green terror or convict, yet they all have done well.

agree, look like a auratus hybrid.
