Sand is perfectly fine. Actually most snails spend their time on the glass or plants etc...looking for biofilm and algae to eat.

A piece of veggie every so often is also a nice treat.
 
The best snails to go with sand are the Malaysian Trumpet snails. these guys love to dig and bury in Sand. its really cool, since they have a trap door, they may survive kulhi loaches who also love to dig in sand. :D
 
snails live everywhere... hence why many consider them a 'pest'
