Just thought I'd share this :)
I bought a Satellite fixture with a moonlight, and was very excited to see how the tank looked at night. Unfortunately, the centre brace completely blocks the little LED, so it's useless unless I move the fixture over, which isn't safe. :(
I've been planning to buy a moonlight fixture, but can't really justify the expense right now, so I came up with a temporary solution for short-term nighttime viewing.
I have a tiny clip-on lamp beside the tank which I use to see in behind the tank when I'm unplugging things, and wondered if I could use it at the top of the tank. There's nothing to clip it to, but it sits very nicely between my two light fixtures, and I've been using it every night - it sends a small shaft of light into the tank that doesn't seem to disturb the fish, and the tank looks completely different, very serene. For $7.99 at Wal-Mart, it's a pretty good solution for watching the tank for an hour or so each night :)

i use two blue aquascape leds between the glass panel on my hood and light fixture,$20 for transformer and $5 for lights. laying them down sideways causes them to illuminate the entire tank instead of creating a blue spotlight. wal-mart, petsmart, petco all sell them. they are water-proof but i dont submerge them, i didnt buy them for this purpose, just recycled them from a 1gal betta bowl.

ive also got those tiny glow-in-the dark plastic stars standing between my hood and light. they are positioned to where they catch stray light and dont block any light to the tank. after flouro and leds are turned out the stars give a nice, weak glow.

LOL it crossed my mind for about 0.0000002 seconds, Kas :) I've read posts about centre braces breaking and tanks bowing - there's a lot of pressure on the glass, the last thing I'd want to do is weaken the support.
I think now that I've got a part-time job at a LFS (can't wait to start!), maybe I'll look and see about getting a proper moonlight, though my little clip-on is doing a great job for now :D
