I know this is the umpteenth question like this..but I'm stocking a 55 gal tank. I have 8 rasboras, and am looking at the following:

8 rasboras
4 pearl gouramis...or could I have more?
3 clown loaches
I really like clowns, but not sure I should keep in 55 gal. On the other hand, it would be a good excuse to upgrade to a 100 gal. If not the clowns, then kuhlis..I have snails.

To this mix would/could I add ottos?
IS there anything else that would go good? I was trying to keep with SE Asian fishes.
I have live plants, sand and fluorite substrate

Hi there! You've picked out some nice fish there! ;)
If you are planning on getting a larger tank sometime in the future, I would def. get more clown loaches...I'd say about 6 or 7 total. Also why not increase your rasbora school? Those guys are really something to look at when they are in larger numbers...say maybe a total of 15 to 20.
You can add the ottos with no problem...they like the company of each other, so I would get at least 4 of them.
Some people may argue with me regarding the pearl gouramis though...in my experience I've kept a school of 6 Pearls with no problem, but there have been instances where people have said they fought with each other and sometimes picked at other fish...IMO they are peaceful, compared to most other gouramis. It also depends on how many males you have, size of the tank and the individual fish's personality. You can always try the 4 pearls and see how they do...if they don't work out, trade them in for something else. I think they would be fine though...just don't get any other type of gouramis.
Good Luck and keep us posted! :dance2:

I would echo what Candycat's experience has been with Pearl Gouramis. I recently added my first PG's to my 55gal. tank. They are small (less than 2") and I believe two are female and one is male. They have been 100% peaceful and have been great so far. I can't even determine if they have staked out a territory yet. They just slowly cruise around the tank and take it easy.

I'm slowly adding to the poulation and they were the latest fish added. They joined several molly and platy fry, two adult silver mollies, and four oto's. Everyone gets along perfectly. The only thing that might make a difference is the age of the PG's you add. I'm just guessing, but the younger ones might get along better than adding full size adults.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

10 clowns - now there's an idea. I am getting a 100g at end of month and they might make interesting companions for existing stock.

I have read a fair pit on pearl gouramis as i think they are beautiful fish and i see a lot of varying reports. I think it's down to the indvidual character of the fish (but i could be wrong as am very new to all this) and it's tank mates.
