I know I could probably find this in a search, I'm at work and the less time I'm on the forum the better, so my appologies.

I want a pair of german blue rams, how can I make sure I have a pair. Doesn't it have something to do with the length of dorsal fin?

Thanks

Well to get a pair you need to observe the tank they are in for a little bit of time and see who is hanging out together. You can get a male and female and still not really get a pair....but chances are they may form a pair just by getting a male and female. With that being said Males are slightly bigger with longer fins. Also one of the best ways although not sure fire is to look at the black spot on the side of their body. Both males and females have this balck spot, however on the female you should see blue dots in and around it and the male will not have these...it will just be a black dot. Hope that helps

First ray of dorsal fin is longer in males. Also, watch behavior of fish at lfs. You can almost always find an alpha male and the alpha female is the fish he picks on the least or allows in his territory. Also, females ready to breed will have a pink belly.

In my opinion, healthy blue rams are hard to find. Bolivian rams are much more hardy, and will color up nicely when they get older (very hard to sex when young)
